Weekly Harvest Cooperative is a CSA located on a small 7 acre farmstead in rural Cedar County between Lowden and Bennett. Our family moved to this acreage in the winter of 2022. We had both grown up on farms and had always wanted to get back into the country. We knew that the typical Iowa row crop farm was not something that was directly in our future but an acreage would be a good start! In the spring of 2022 we planted our first garden on the property. We hand tilled a 30x80ft plot, built fencing, and planted our starts. With very little experience, a lot of YoutTube videos, and a little luck we were able to produce an abundance of veggies. In fact, the abundance was so much that we were unable to preserve the extent of what we had grown and ended up giving a large amount away to friends and family. The next year in 2023 we were hooked on the garden and making all the improvements we could! We put down ground cover so we could focus more on the plants and less on weeding. We implemented a timed drip irrigation system so our plants always had the water they needed. We mapped out the rows better make sure all of our plants had the right amount of sun. But the biggest change we decided to make was trying to test the waters of running a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). We asked friends and family in the area if they were interested in being our test subjects for our wild new endeavor. The deal was simple, they would get bi-weekly baskets of fresh produce and we would get feedback and a donation of whatever they valued the basket at. We ended up delivering 7 baskets of produce, once every two weeks throughout the summer. Our 2024 season will be our first year trying to scale up the operation. We have found other small farmers, makers, and bakers in our area that we are hoping to partner with and provide add-ons to your base share and we learned A LOT throughout our test year! The 2024 season will be a season of implementing our lessons learned and improvements. We have a lot of work to do and there will be many more bumps in the road but the beauty of a CSA is that you can come along for the ride with us! We will be planning and posting updates all throughout the off-season and are hopeful to have a small quantity of shares available for sale starting in the new year! Please feel free to reach out to us via our Contact/Visit page, we are always wanting to hear from our current and potential partners!
